Matcha, Mate, and Caffeine

At Jahmu we produce two caffeinated products, Turmeric Chai With Caffeine, and Matchai. Each product contains a different variety of green tea, Yerba Mate and Matcha respectively, which provide a gentler caffeinated experience than coffee, in addition to nutritional health benefits. Our Turmeric Chai With Caffeine has no sugar so it tastes quite similar to the original Jahmu blend (Caffeine Free Turmeric Chai.) Matchai has organic Indonesian coconut sugar in it so it is lightly sweetened.

So what’s the difference between Yerba Mate and Matcha, and why do we use both?

Yerba Mate can contain between 60-90 mg of caffeine per 8 oz cup, a higher concentration than Matcha which only contains up to 45mg of caffeine per serving.

We selected Yerba Mate for our Turmeric Chai With Caffeine instead of the traditional black tea found in many chai blends, for it’s higher caffeine and antioxidant content, and we think the subtle woodsy taste effortlessly combines with our turmeric, ginger and chai flavors. This is a great option if you are looking to decrease your coffee consumption, which often has over 100mg of caffeine per cup, but still like some caffeine to start your day or keep it going. With about 60 milligrams of caffeine per serving the Jahmu With Caffeine avoids overstimulating the nervous system, giving you sustainable energy instead of the crash that often comes 15 minutes after your last sip of coffee. Yerba Mate has also been found to contain the antioxidant chlorogenic acid which may slow the body’s glucose release, regulate blood sugar, and reduce blood pressure

Matcha is most widely used in its powdered form and contains a sweeter, deeper flavor than yerba mate, in addition to a brighter pigment. Our Matchai still has the distinct Jahmu flavor however it is toned down and smoothed out by the green tea flavor. It also contains the amino acid L-theanine which provides a calming effect, producing greater mental focus, and sustained energy throughout the day.

In our products we estimate there to be 60 mg of caffeine in our Turmeric Chai with Caffeine blend, and between 25-45 mg of caffeine in a serving of Matchai

The caffeinated effect from both of these products is superior to that of coffee and will be more sustained because they aren’t boosting your system into full alert mode. Both will provide you with the adequate alertness and ability to focus, while delivering antioxidants, polyphenols and flavonoids that help reduce inflammation and plaque buildup in the arteries.

Try rotating green tea into your daily routine and observe the benefits for yourself. See our individual Yerba Mate and Matcha pages for a deeper dive into the unique properties of these teas, and check out the products to determine your preference!
